Information Theoretic Analysis of Connection Structure from Spike Trains

چکیده
We have attempted to use information theoretic quantities for analyzing neuronal connection structure from spike trains. Two point mu tual information and its maximum value, channel capacity, between a pair of neurons were found to be useful for sensitive detection of crosscorrelation and for estimation of synaptic strength, respectively. Three point mutual information among three neurons could give their interconnection structure. Therefore, our information theoretic analysis was shown to be a very powerful technique for deducing neuronal connection structure. Some concrete examples of its application to simulated spike trains are presented.

Objective assessment of the functional role of spike train correlations using information measures
The functional role of correlations between neuronal spike trains remains strongly debated. This debate partly stems from the lack of a standardized analysis technique capable of accurately quantifying the role of correlations in stimulus encoding. We believe that information theoretic measures may represent an objective method for analysing the functional role of neuronal correlations. Here we...
متن کاملThe Computational Structure of Spike Trains
Neurons perform computations, and convey the results of those computations through the statistical structure of their output spike trains. Here we present a practical method, grounded in the information-theoretic analysis of prediction, for inferring a minimal representation of that structure and for characterizing its complexity. Starting from spike trains, our approach finds their causal stat...
متن کاملEntropy and information in neural spike trains: progress on the sampling problem.
The major problem in information theoretic analysis of neural responses and other biological data is the reliable estimation of entropy-like quantities from small samples. We apply a recently introduced Bayesian entropy estimator to synthetic data inspired by experiments, and to real experimental spike trains. The estimator performs admirably even very deep in the undersampled regime, where oth...
متن کاملInformation Exchange between Pairs of Spike Trains in the Mammalian Visual System
We have studied the neural ring patterns of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and their target lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) cells. Reliable information transmission coexists with fractal uctuations which appear in RGC and LGN ring patterns. Unexpectedly , these uctuations appear not to be independent across LGN cells; information is also shared among pairs of LGN spike trains. Over short time s...
متن کاملDecoding neuronal spike trains: how important are correlations?
It has been known for >30 years that neuronal spike trains exhibit correlations, that is, the occurrence of a spike at one time is not independent of the occurrence of spikes at other times, both within spike trains from single neurons and across spike trains from multiple neurons. The presence of these correlations has led to the proposal that they might form a key element of the neural code. ...
